Subject: [Waayeelnews.blogspot.com] A court in the Netherlands (Somali pirates).
(RTTNews) - A court in the Netherlands on Friday ordered the deportation of ten suspected Somali pirates to Germany for standing trial there in a case involving the hijacking of a German-flagged container ship, according to reports.
Judge Ans Davids dismissed the petition filed by the accused challenging their extradition saying that their objections were unfounded.
The court observed that they would receive a fair trial in Germany adding that the order must be implemented within ten days since appeals are not possible under Dutch law. Apparently it was as part of a strategy employed by the defense counsel that the suspects challenged their deportation in court.
According to the prosecution which built up the case on the basis of evidence provided by the Hamburg judiciary, the suspects seized 'MS Taipan' 500 nautical miles off the Somali coast in April. However, Dutch marines from the European Union's (EU) anti-piracy Atlanta naval task force subsequently freed the ship and the pirates were taken to the Netherlands.
The ship was on its way from Mombasa in Kenya to Djibouti when it came under attack from corsairs and one marine was injured in the exchange of fire. Ten pirates were captured while Taipan's 15-member crew released unharmed in the shootout between Dutch forces and the outlaws.
